The Lost Art of Forum Etiquette

Marketing using forums is a slowly rising traffic technique used today. The benefits are great and simple to get. They are, at least, if you know what’s expected of you at any given forum. While they’re all different in their own way all forums will follow the same basic rules. Somewhere between the 1990s and now this knowledge seemed to have been lost. This is even more apparent for online marketers, some who have never used a message board before. What also has been lost is forum etiquette. It seems online marketers are the biggest group of people that don’t seem to know about or understand this, as most of it is unwritten, until now.

All the obvious stuff about forums is still true and has not changed. You register, become part of the community, work your way through their hierarchy and become a respected member. Be active. Give it some time and really work the area. In this regard every article you’ve ever read about forum marketing is spot on. All of these suggestions both benefit and help the community you’ve joined as a whole without pointing the mods at you for spamming or being there to sell your stuff. Here’s where most go wrong:

DON’T DOUBLE POST! I can’t stress that one enough. Double posting is when you make a post in reply to yourself. It can be any number of times as well, but ‘double posting’ is the term for it. Online marketers LOVE to double post. I’m telling you now, stop doing it. The Edit button was designed for just this reason. Obviously, you seem to want your signature link to be posted once more and gain another backlink. That’s bad form. And it’s bad form because of the possible consequences. At minimum your post will likely be edited to just a single post like you should have done with the Edit button. At worst BOTH posts will be deleted. The reason why double posting is frowned upon is because, in a typical conversation(the spirit in which message boards try to recreate), people reply back and forth to each other. While is not normally a bannable offense you will make some mods angry from editing your posts so much and they’ll probably stick you on a Watch List. Not good for your marketing.

Another thing that is a constant offense, though not bannable, is having a Signature that breaks the forum’s rules. This will get you quick Private Messages from the moderators as well as annoy them for every day you haven’t fixed it. They’ll also know you DID NOT read their forum rules before creating your signature. This, like double posting, already starts you out working back to point zero with the management. The moderators may also just decide to edit your signature out of every post you have or ban your signature all together if you haven’t changed it to their rules and/or ignored Private Messages to change it.

Another obvious one is don’t jump in advertising something. If your first post to as far as your first ten posts smell like ads you’ll be put on a Watch List quick or even just have your account deleted because you’ll be viewed as a spammer. Spambots do this type of thing all the time, but when they can tell a person is doing it they may be a bit faster on the trigger.

When you think about it, all these rules of forum etiquette exist because it’s so easy to weed out marketers and spammers with them. They’re usually first to double post and first to make lots of small posts to get their backlinks. This is why forums have rules that allow the deletion of posts such as “I agree.”, “Thanks.” and “I sent you a PM.” The rules may be annoying but they were designed with the best interests in mind. It just happened to be exactly what marketers don’t like to have on their boards. In an ideal world no one would market or sell anyone anything on message boards. You probably go to some to relax. If you follow the above you’ll have a much higher chance of marketing successfully and avoiding getting banned.

I’m a moderator at a few forums ran by other people. I see this stuff happen constantly. Of all the boards I go to, and I go to a lot of them, internet marketers are by far the most guilty of the above offenses in the article. I don’t know when this knowledge was lost, but it’s time it was found again.

Interest Versus Research

Ever had a project you want to do not seem to match your research? Ever had that project actually be something you wanted to create? Well, I’m in this situation.

I’ve found a great place to potentially have something really cool, but I can’t find the interest anywhere. Perhaps all the hype about people wanting to learn how to make money from video is just that, hype.

So I’ve got to see if there really is an interest here. I’ve set up a notification list anyone can sign up for and let me know if they really want to learn this or if there’s no response, that it really is falling on deaf ears. If this is really true, where are all the people?

If you count yourself among the people who want to learn how to make money from video please sign up below.

Getting Re-Motivated

Hey guys!

It’s been a long time. I went through this spell where my heart just wasn’t in it anymore. As you can see, it was partially about the Amero, and that’s still true. A lot of things will change if and when the Amero goes into circulation. Like all of our buy links changing…. yeah, that’ll be fun to do.

Anyway, I think I’ve found my muse that got me motivated the first time.  My goal for internet marketing has never been money related. It was a means to an end. Maybe that’s why I’m not quite as good at it as I could be, but whatever the case a non-monetary goal has done for me marketingwise, it would still mean nothing without motivation to do the daily tasks that even bring in a few cents a day. Even those can dry up if you don’t keep them maintained.

Basically, I’m in a lull in my life that again feels like the first hole I escaped that got me here to begin with. Again I had to fight to remember and want what it was that even got me to this place. I’ve always wanted this thing and success, but without motivation, and desire, and intent to get it, it’s just a flowery daydream. It’s been that for so long now I was beginning to accept it as truth. A very bad thing to do.

I’m returning back to the game more motivated than ever. No one but me is going to make these projects happen, and no one but me wants what I want. So, it looks like no one but me can fix this situation.

I’ve already got an idea in mind for my next product. I’m going to jump into market research and take it from there. I can see my light at the end of the tunnel again. It’s always so close, but this time, I’m going to catch it.

The Amero: Be Aware

So it’s been awhile since I updated. This is partly due to the holidays coming in two back-to-back months. I’m sure everyone out there has similar things happening. :)
Anyway, this is about something that you would think would be a hot topic of discussion but is not. It’s in regard to the Amero. At the basic level the Amero would be a combined currency between the US, Mexico, and Canada. It is already happening and there was even an CNBC broadcast where it was discussed:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hiPrsc9g98

One radio broadcaster, surely to be future conspiracy theorist and assumed crackpot, has pictures and video of what this coin looks like. Interesting read, even for you types who think the government is honest with you. You can read that here. While it’s more public domain at this point, the Amero isn’t supposed to exist yet, at all.

That’s a side issue though. As I suspect most, if not all of my readers are US resident and marketers themselves an important question needs to be asked. What does this mean and why should I care?

With a coin already being Minted and it’s plans slowly trickling into the mainstream, combined with the decline of the US Dollar it should be clear to some there is at least two points there. While two points do not make a line they should raise an eyebrow. For the Amero to come into existence our Dollar would have to be taken out of circulation. If you run it’s value into the ground no one will argue when this proposed change to the Amero happens.

I’m still undecided if this new Minting is a good or bad idea, but I do know the way the government is going about it is wrong. It’s using the simple outline of creating a problem then offering the solution. We often deal with different parts of this equation in affiliate marketing and our own marketing, but we never create the problem first so that our customers have to come us to fix it. This is my problem with the Amero and the loss of value of the American Dollar.

Obviously, this is neither here nor there in regards to internet marketing, but since it deals exactly with the currency we do business in it should matter to us. With the “official” debut of the Amero many could be bankrupt overnight, just as others will become rich overnight from the currency change.

My heart hasn’t been in Internet Marketing for awhile since I’ve been trying to figure out how to best deal with the soon-to-be inevidable change-over. This post has you in the mind, the marketer, and maybe together we can do something to get out of this the same, or better, than we are now.

Lately, sine it’s not a hot topic yet and I think it should be, let other people know. Show them this, have them Google “Amero”, whatever. We can’t change what we don’t know about.

The Application of Knowledge

The application of knowledge in internet marketing is what really separates one from being successful from someone who spends years struggling without making a cent. There is a wealth of free information available online for how to make money. Maybe this information being free is causing some people to become lazy in their application or usefulness of the information.

Free products and reports like Chimp Change and Russell Brunson’s IM Myth may not seem to hold as useful information in people’s mind as a product they have to buy. So while their knowledge grows and increases, they perhaps keep looking for that important piece of information that will set them financially free. Most of us have probably been through the phase where we go from program to program trying to find the one that fits us.

There have been incredibly successful products released to help people get over this learning phase to the application of what they’ve learned. Mike Filsaime’s Butterfly Marketing and the infamous Rich Jerk have created lots of new internet marketers who will soon make a name for themselves. Perhaps that’s exactly what this group of aspiring internet marketers need.

Most remember exactly what internet marketing product or document made them get into the game and stick with it as long as it takes to make it. That single product that grew in them the sudden inspriation to succeed come hell or high water. While knowledge grows the internet keeps changing, and what may have been good and useful a year ago may no longer work or be ineffective. These changes that cause changes in the results of new internet marketers, who may see their efforts happening as too slow or not at all, may be a big reason for the lack of the application of new knowledge they get.

The honest truth is that there is no instant traffic generation technique that will flood your inbox with sales, or make your rich with more money than you can imagine in a short time, or have money roll in on autopilot–UNLESS you apply everything you learn as much as you can. The knowledge you get needs to turn into work to make it happen, whether it’s experimenting with PPC or writing an article a day. If it were as easy as auto-pilot from day one eerybody would be doing this. You really do get back what you put in, and you learn as you go.

To Your Success!

You see it written on sales letters, in some mailing lists, and even in forum signatures. It’s a very common way to end a document in internet marketing. The saying is only three words: . You see it on sales pages for new product releases to places like Traffic Swarm. In fact, the phrase seems to live on Traffic Exchanges.

In researching this phrase I found it located on a lot of non-internet marketing related sites. This could just be because the sales letters are not indexed in the search engines, but if they are they didn’t appear high enough in the search results.

This phrase seems to be everywhere in the internet marketing community. Why do we use it? In my opinion, it seems to be a good, non-committing, non-gender specific closing statement. It reads to everyone the same. At the same time I think it’s a bit detached to the reader. Rather than the above deduction of being non-committing it can read back as the visitor being just another customer.

To be fair, I haven’t tested this on sales pages yet, but would be interested to see the results(if any) that this phrase has against other closing statements. It seems that this may have been something one maketer did and gradually caught on as others thought it was a good idea or addition to what they were already doing.

Perhaps, by now, I’m simply numb or jaded to the sales pitches and marketing techniques I seem to be around all the time. I can’t say whether or not those three little words impact your sales numbers, but it will be tested when I come out a new product. Before then I’m curious if another marketer has done this test to see if it really makes a difference. Visitors have very short attention spans and those words are always at the bottom of the page, so how do we know they read them before making a buying decision?

If anyone is currently testing sales pages I’d be interested in their results regarding this. Well, it looks like this is coming to an end.

To your success,

Robert Kreuk

The Value of the Upsell

There’s lots of ways to make money on the internet. One of them that is used by experienced and successful marketers is the upsell. This is offering a potential customer another product or service after they get something from you as you raise the price a little bit.

Sometimes this goes from product to another product to a coaching program to a membership site or whatever else they feel would logically follow. Since each step is a small increment in price it can increase your visitor’s chance of buying. These are also sometimes used with One Time Offers(OTO). The upsell also takes advantage of your potential customer(or customer if it lands after buying something) being in a buying mood.

An Upsell offer can be nearly set on auto-pilot if it’s attached to an auto-responder. By offering them something free(an ebook, service, etc.) then offering an upsell after they get the free product, they have a better chance of buying that upsell from you. Whatever niche you’re in or product you upsell to make sure it’s something your niche would be interested in. Youalready have their attention, so upsell to them something you know they would be interested in.

Teenager Makes Millions Making MySpace Pages

A young girl and Michigan native named Ashley Qualls is a teenager making millions of dollars on the internet. She does it by making and creating MySpace pages. I know the arena is popular among internet marketers, but what she has been doing may be what a lot of us need to learn or have never learned. This 17 year old has quit school to work online more and is currently schedule to appear on The View.

Ashley is the owner of Whateverlife.com, a website that boasts traffic of over 250,000 visitors PER DAY!

Through a mix of Pay-Per-Lead offers, Adsense, and a unique and original layout it’s no surprise her site is hugely popular among her target audience. Ashley believes in keeping her site free as well and has turned down multi-million dollar offers to sell Whateverlife.com so she can keep creating for her own website, .

CNN report and video can be seen here:
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/tech/2007/09/21/agar.myspace.million.WXYZ

This method of making money differs in comparison to the way internet marketers usually use MySpace. Products like SpaceBankers can have the same effect as what Ashley Qualls has done, but in a different approach.

Blogs versus Websites

Surprisingly, this is not an easy question to answer.

Websites give you a lot of freedom. You can upload templates, design perfectly fitting graphics and logos, and have the ability to use any and all software to create them. They are easy to design as well because of HTML editors like Dreamweaver and Frontpage.

Blogs, which are like a Movable Type website, also a lot of the same freedoms. You can use all kinds of templates, use most software available, and also design well fitting graphics. Blogs have different types of platforms as well, with the most nobable being perhaps Blogger and Wordpress.

Currently, I’d prefer to use a blog. Which is against the way I was taught to create websites. I was taught to hardcode HTML, learn tables, frames, the whole nine yards. Blogs and websites can both do normal HTML coding, and even the newer coding of CSS and PHP. So neither one really has an advantage there.

The main reason I like blogs is theri ability to organize a large amount of webpages while being easy to update at the same time. Blogger is a simpler version of the blog platform but they still let you somewhat organize your pages into categories and/or keywords. Wordpress really opens the doors to you with getting as narrow as Meta and Keywords for each page or post. Some of this would need to be done by hand even in an HTML editor.

I think the biggest advantage blogs have over websites is the “blog and ping” method. Where you make a post, ping that post through a web server like Ping-o-matic, and wait for the search engine spiders to come and index your new updated material. Blog feeds(RSS or Atom) are often used on normal websites in a pseudo-way to keep the search engine spiders coming back to accomplish the same purpose. Some blog programs can be set to do this pinging automatically.

Also, something I’ve noticed with the rise of Web 2.0, is that a blog can take more advantage of the tools of this new generation of websites. A blog feed gets your site out to places it may never have gotten before, whereas a website has no access to such a “feed”.

I own both blog sites and normal websites, but the rate the internet is evolving in Web 2.0 technology, the sites that can keep up best will likely survive and continue to get that all-important traffic. Right now, I think blog’s beat websites by a nose, but it’s extending its lead everyday.
